SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball fell 69-64 to Westmont on Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Recreation Center.
Mahliya Wilson led the Penguins (18-6, 12-6 PacWest) with 16 points, four rebounds and four steals, while
Kaylyn Buchanon chipped in 13 points, four assists and four steals. Mariah Brown finished with a game-high 22 points for the Warriors (18-6, 14-4 PacWest), with Lindsey Kiefer having a fantastic all-around game of eight points, 15 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Westmont held a significant size advantage inside and used it to their advantage offensively to finish shooting 46.3% from the field while holding Dominican to 31% shooting.
The Warriors made full use of their size advantage over the Penguins as they repeatedly went down low to score the first six points of the game.
Kaylyn Buchanon stole the ball and took it the other way to help Dominican quickly close the gap to 8-6 with 6:40 remaining, but Westmont went back to its bigs and scored the next seven to push its lead to nine on Lisa Kiefer's old fashioned 3-point play.
Aryn Bright knocked down a 3-pointer to pull Dominican back within five, but a pair of free throws pushed the Westmont lead back to seven heading to the second quarter.
Janiya Sawyer converted a 3-point play early in the second and
Mahliya Wilson split a pair of defenders and laid it off the glass to once again pull within two at 23-21 with 6:37 until the half. The teams traded baskets until
Julianne Cotterill collected an offensive board and put it back to tie the game 32-32 with 29 seconds remaining and it remained that way heading to the locker room.
A give and go between
Jamia Sawyer and Buchanon allowed Buchanon to kiss it off the glass and give Dominican its first lead of the game with the first basket of the second half. Westmont settled in and scored the next nine to take a 41-34 lead with 5:27 left in the third quarter. After the Penguins scrapped their way back within four, Skyler Knight hit a corner 3-pointer and Kiefer swiped it on the other end and laid it in for a 48-37 Warrior lead. Buchanon made a half court heave before the buzzer to trim the deficit to 52-45 as the Penguins continued to try and battle their way back into the game.
Westmont hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the fourth with Brown going around a screen and popping the second from the top of the key to extend the lead back to 11. After the lead grew to 12 with four minutes remaining,
Alyssa Alvarado went to the rim for a pair of layups and Buchanon pulled up for a short jumper to get back within two possessions heading into the final minute of play. The lead was too great for the Penguins to overcome as Westmont sealed the game from the line.
Dominican hits the road as it gets rematches with its last two opponents on their home courts beginning with Biola at Chase Gymnasium on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PST in La Mirada.
