Penguins Walk It Off Against Wildcats In Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican softball staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Central Washington, 5-4, in non-conference action Saturday at Warrior Softball Field, closing out the Stan State Invitational in thrilling fashion.

Aneesa Brewer delivered the clutch moment in the bottom of the sixth inning, blasting a three-run home run over the left-field fence to tie the game at 4-4. One inning later, Taylor Rodriguez laid down a bunt to the pitcher, who attempted to make the force out at third. The throw sailed wide of the bag, allowing the winning run to score and sealing the 5-4 walk-off victory for the Penguins.

Central Washington struck first with an RBI double in the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead. What followed was a dominant pitching duel between Reese Anderson and Alexis Verduzco, who combined to allow just two hits, one apiece, through the first four innings.

The Wildcats added three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their advantage to 4-0 and Dominican began its response in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Leslie Ruiz scored off a Kaitlyn Aguilar single. In the sixth, Brewer's three-run homer brought Aguilar and Alexis Abalos home to even the score.

Back-to-back walks opened the bottom of the seventh, setting the stage for Rodriguez's decisive bunt. The Wildcats' pitcher Alex Flohr, who had entered the game just three batters earlier, was unable to handle the quick throw, allowing the winning run to cross the plate.

With the victory, Dominican improves to 5-5 on the season and will next face Cal State Monterey Bay on Wednesday at the Otter Sports Complex.
