AZUSA, Calif.- Dominican women's basketball (15-5, 9-5) wrapped up their SoCal road trip facing off against the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University Saturday afternoon. This game was tight until the last couple of seconds as the Cougars were able to pull away with the 82-80 victory.
Redshirt freshman
Mahliya Wilson led the way offensively for the black and gold as she posted 19 points while grabbing eight boards. Wilson, the Chula Vista native, was aggressive early on as she constantly put pressure on the APU defense attacking them inside the paint and with her sweet looking jumper.
Kaylyn Buchanon, the fellow Chula Vista native and back court mate, was everywhere on the court for the Pengs as she dropped 15 points while also being pesky on defense swiping a team high three steals.
Wilson and Buchanon led Dominican in the first half giving APU fits throughout. The back court duo would get some help from the bench as
Janiya Sawyer provided a spark finishing with 17 points on an efficient 7 for 10 from the field. Sawyer, the Richmond native, provided clutch buckets in the third quarter helping the Pengs cut into the Cougars deficit.
Senior leader
Keyonee Neal rounded out the top scorers for the black and gold as she collected a double-double finishing with 13 points and 10 boards. Neal was a menace down low for the Pengs hauling in every ball that hit the board while also swatting away a game high three blocks.
Dominican will be back in action Feb. 7
th at 2 p.m. when they travel to Fresno Pacific.
