Dominican concludes Hawaiian trip Sunday night

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Dominican University of California women's volleyball team battled against Chaminade University on Sunday afternoon but ultimately fell. 

The Penguins came out strong in the opening set, keeping pace with the Silverswords throughout the frame. Dominican recorded 12 kills in the set, with Alexis Schwartz and Kalaya Phung helping lead the offensive attack. However, Chaminade edged ahead late to take the first set, 25-21.

Dominican faced a challenging second set as Chaminade found its rhythm offensively. The Penguins continued to compete but were unable to overcome the deficit, dropping the frame 25-12.

Refusing to back down, Dominican put together a stronger performance in the third set, pushing Chaminade to the final points. The Penguins recorded seven kills and kept the contest close before the Silverswords secured the match with a 25-23 victory.

Alexis Schwartz and Kalaya Phung led the Penguins offensively with six kills apiece, while Ashlyn Daugherty contributed four kills and a team-high three block assists. Trinity Tavita also added four kills while finishing with two block assists.

At the setter position, Chloe Cruz paced Dominican with 12 assists and contributed three service aces. Sophia Bernabe anchored the defensive effort with a team-high 11 digs, while Cierra Ray added five digs.

Dominican finished the match with 24 kills, five service aces, four total blocks and 30 digs. The Penguins will be back on home soil this Saturday as they take on Jessup at 7 p.m. for Family Weekend.
