AZUSA, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (12-8, 7-7) ended the month of January with a bang. Senior guard
Nick Medeiros led the black and gold to a 75-68 victory giving the Pengs their seventh conference win and putting them right in the thick of things for postseason play beginning in March. This also marks the fourth straight win over Azusa Pacific.
Stephen Ransom got the day started when he received a nice dish from teammate
Darius Best and finished it off with a sweet looking lay-up. Ransom, the Vallejo native, would call his own number again on the ensuing possession finishing on a strong drive to the basket. He would finish the day with 12 points on an efficient 5 for 6 from the field.
Medeiros would get his day started when he found some space in the Cougars defense and showed off his nice-looking jump shot. Midway through the first half he would start to heat up as he hit back-to-back jumpers then scored on a tough looking reverse lay-up. Fellow senior
Darius Best helped Medeiros in the offensive department as he finished the day collecting 12 points to go along with a team high four assists.
With the game tied at 34 after the first half, the black and gold would rely on their bench in the second.
Austin Johnson and
Sargent Jeffery carried their momentum from this past Thursday's game against Vanguard into Saturday's game against the Cougars. Johnson provided crucial buckets midway through the second half and even hit a nice, contested trey. Jeffery, the big man from Nevada, made his presence felt down low as he finished with seven points while grabbing a team high five boards. His crucial bucket in the game came with seven minutes to go when he found himself wide open from behind the arc, and with full confidence, hit nothing but net to extend the Penguins lead.
Towards the end of the game, Dominican would lean on their veteran back court duo to close out the game. Medeiros would hit a couple of free throws mixed in with tough looking lay-ups to finish with a game high 20 points while hauling in four rebounds. Best and
Michael Wilson followed suit late in the game and hit timely jumpers to secure the victory.Â
