SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Isobel Crosswhite celebrated a career day on her birthday as she led Dominican women's basketball to a 75-63 victory over CUI on Saturday afternoon at the Conlan Recreation Center.
Crosswhite finished with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds to go with two steals for the Penguins (10-2, 4-2 PacWest).
Janiya Sawyer added 12 points and four rebounds as Dominican relied heavily on their bench on the day with 47 points. Camryn Kiernan finished with 14 points and five assists to lead the Golden Eagles (5-5, 3-2 PacWest), but they could not match the depth of the Penguins finishing with 17 points off the bench.
Keyonee Neal and
Alyssa Alvarado each knocked down shots from behind the arc early in the game to push Dominican ahead 8-4 in the first three minutes. With the bench coming in to rest starters at the midway point the lead grew as
Aryn Bright stole the ball and threw it ahead to Alvarado for the layup to take a 14-5 lead with 3:07 left in the quarter. Kiernan knocked down a 3-pointer to halt the momentum and then got behind the defense for a fastbreak layup in transition to cut the lead to four heading into the final minute of the quarter.
The Penguins maintained their two-possession lead heading into the second and Alvarado used her speed to get into the lane for a layup to start the scoring in the new period.
Kaylyn Buchanon stole the ball and then threw it ahead to Sawyer for the layup to push the lead to nine seconds later as Dominican continued to control the pace of the game. Crosswhite then began to take over scoring six-unanswered points to cap the 10-1 run to open the period and push the Penguins lead to 30-16 at the midway point of the quarter. After four quick CUI points cut into the lead, Crosswhite had a putback, a 3-pointer and then a steal leading to a
Mahliya Wilson jumper to take the 37-20 lead with 2:45 until the break.
The Golden Eagles struggled to find an answer until after the break as Hannah Vela connected from behind the arc and Genesis Hopkins got loose under the basket for a layup to cut their deficit to 41-33 with 8:38 on the third quarter clock. Buchanon converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and then found Crosswhite on a dime of a pass for a layup to cap a 7-0 run that pushed the lead back to 14 over the next two minutes. Crosswhite laid it in two more times and then
Jamia Sawyer found Bright in transition for another layup to push the lead to 56-39 and force a timeout with 2:34 left in the third as the teams traded baskets to finish the quarter.
Janiya Sawyer hit the first layup of the fourth quarter before Crosswhite stole the ball and got the ball moving up the court where twin
Jamia Sawyer finished the 2-on-1 layup for the 64-44 lead in the first 30 seconds. The lead grew as large as 22 as Dominican cruised to the victory down the stretch.
The Penguins will continue their homestand Thursday as they face University of Hawai'i at Hilo at 5:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Recreation Center.
