Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Penguins ice out the Oaks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's basketball (11-7, 6-6) dropped the Oaks in front of an energetic home crowd in what was dubbed the "white-out" game for the fans inside the Igloo 83-76.

Senior guard Nick Medeiros got the game started in front of the raucous Penguin home crowd when he drove hard into the paint and finished with a strong lay-up. Then on the ensuing offensive possession fellow senior Darius Best received a nice dish from Medeiros who finished the play sinking a long-range trey.

The Oaks would respond to a quick start from the black and gold with a run of their own led by their guard Nick High. Midway through the first half both teams defenses were on display as the blocks came swatting down. Dominican didn't make anything come easy inside the paint for the Oaks with junior Michael Wilson swatting away a couple and Stephen Ransom coming out of nowhere to soar and block High as he drove into the paint.

Best would start to heat up to close the half as he found soft spot in the Oaks defense and took advantage. The North Carolina native showed off his offensive arsenal hitting multiple jumpers while finishing strong in the paint. Ransom would get the 415 back on their feet towards the last couple minutes of first when he chased down a missed shot and slammed it back down for an empathic two-points.

Dominican would start the second half the same way they started the game, on fire. Senior Jorge Ochoa grabbed the first points of the second for the Pengs, then he started to feel it when he came back and drained a three over the Oaks fallen defender. The longball became contagious for the black and gold as Wilson, Best, Austin Johnson, and Omari Davis joined Ochoa at the three-point party in the second.

The Pengs front court started to make an impact midway through the second when Sargent Jeffery and Ransom flashed their niftiness down low both collecting multiples lay-ups. Ransom once again brought the "white-out" 415 home crowd to their feet with another energetic slam. Jeffery would give Dominican some wiggle room with five minutes left when he finished on a nice reverse lay-up while getting fouled.

Dominican will be back in action Jan. 29th on the road at 6 p.m. against Vanguard.
