SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – A few bad bounces sent Dominican men's soccer to a 3-2 loss in a hard-fought contest against Cal State East Bay on Saturday at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (1-1-0) had 22 shots with nine on frame, while the Pioneers finished with 14 shots and six on target. The game was physical with five yellow cards combined and 18 fouls.
Sergio Laguna and
Rolando Gonzalez each recorded the first goals of their Dominican careers, while Joans Banouas and Yuto Hatayama recorded the first goals of the season for CSUEB.
The opening minutes saw the teams trade runs into their attacking thirds and a pair of shots on goal for each, but nothing that either goalie could not handle with ease. In the 11th minute a cross into the box was headed by a Penguin defender into his own net resulting in the 1-0 lead for CSUEB. Dominican had several dangerous opportunities, but the flag came up for each spoiling their chance at the equalizer.
Dimani Mathlin used a throw in to get a ball deep into the box in the 28th minute where
Brandon Selway nodded it ahead to the foot of Laguna for a low shot into the middle of the back netting to tie the game 1-1.
The Pioneers drew a penalty in the 51st minute on a foul in the box and Banouas stepped to the spot and slipped a shot just past the fingertips of Collin Nestor to retake a 2-1 lead. In the 70th minute, Hatayama took a shot from distance that he was able to sneak inside the left post for the 3-1 CSUEB lead. Dominican struggled to find its footing for much of the second half until Gonzalez took a shot from 25-yards out that he buried in the upper-right 90 to trim the Penguin deficit to 3-2 in the 78th minute.
Dominican got another promising run one minute later as Alejandro Amaya-Suarez got right in front of goal, but Adan Corona made the save to keep his slim lead.
Brandon Selway was inches from tying the game in the 83rd minute as he headed a free kick high, but Corona got a fingertip on the shot to push it over the crossbar.
Dominican will hit the road as it heads to Colorado to face Metro State on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. MDT.
