Penguins win thriller against Chaminade

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Janae Schwan scored a last minute goal for her first brace for Dominican women's soccer and lifting it to a 2-1 victory over Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (4-0-4, 2-0-0 PacWest) remained unbeaten on the year as the teams battled to a near statistical tie with Dominican edging the Silverswords (0-1-5, 0-1-1PacWest) 9-6 in total shots. Angelina Hert made three saves for the Penguins to pick up her second victory over the season with Schwan providing the offense with her second and third goals of the season.

Quick passing between Araceli Mejia and Ysabella Belandres helped set Ashlynn Hill up with a good look at goal from the top of the box for the first shot on goal in the 14th minute, but the shot went write to the Silverswords' Maddie Merrick in goal. Chaminade made a similar play in the 17th minute as a free kick was cleared out of the box but Kierra Reid collected it and sent a looping shot towards the net from 25 yards outforcing Angelina Hert to make a diving save to her right.

The Silverswords had another dangerous attempt off a corner kick in the 20th minute as the ball pinballed around until Bryn Shimabukuro was able to poke it towards the net and Hert was there again to turn the attempt aside. The Penguins brought in some fresh legs and found a push two minutes later as Chaminade furiously battled to clear a ball from its box but the defense was only able to clear it as far as Janae Schwan who sent the first touch she saw in the match toward the net on a looping shot over the keeper and down under the crossbar for the 1-0 lead.

The Silverswords continued to make the most of their set pieces as Madelynne Knowd sent a corner kick into the center of the box in the 58th minute and found Brynn Shimabukuro for a header that just cleared the Penguin back line to tie the game 1-1. Dominican had several dangerous runs into the box in the 73rd and 74th minutes resulting in a dangerous free kick and a corner kick, but the Chaminade defense did just enough to block any final shots from getting through and challenging Merrick.

The Silverswords looked to have an opportunity to take the lead in the 85th minute on yet another set piece with a mass of chaos right in front of the net with Hert coming out of the pile with the ball. Both teams continued to look for the winner and Dominican earned a corner kick with just over one minute left in the game. The ball sailed in and the Silverswords knocked down a header with a hand resulting in a penalty kick. Schwan stepped to the spot and placed a perfect shot inside the left post that the keeper could not touch despite guessing the right direction to hand Dominican the 2-1
lead and the victory.

The Penguins will hit the road next week to take on Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 5 p.m. PDT at Cougar Soccer Field in Azusa, California.
