SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer struck early then rode its defense to top Chaminade 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Rolando Gonzalez scored his third goal of the year for the Penguins while
Colin Nestor picked up his first shutout for the Penguins (3-4-1, 1-0-1 PacWest) with six saves on the day. Dominican dominated in almost every statistical category while the Silverswords (0-4-0, 0-2-0 PacWest) had more shots on frame but none that were particularly challenging for Nestor.
The Penguins wasted no time to get on the board working their way down the field with several quick passes to free
Anthony Stainer on the right side of the box and he crossed it back to the left with
Sergio Laguna redirecting it in the middle of the box to Gonzalez for the shot and goal in the third minute. The teams settled into a defensive minded battle from there with the Silverswords managing only two shots in the half with none of any significant danger to Nestor.
Six minutes into the second half Vlad Tomutiu had the first good look at goal for Chaminade as he sent a short angle shot towards the near post, but Nestor had it covered and gathered it in and started the attack the other way.
Sharod Williams got a
good look at goal for the Penguins as a pass found him alone on the right side of the box, but his shot was blocked on the way through in the 58th minute.
Ricky Maldonado took a shot from 25-yards out in the 73rd minute trying to go low and to the back post but Jonah Valmonte made the diving save to his right to push the ball wide.
Sergio Laguna had a look on the ensuing corner kick with Valmonte again being in the right place at the right time to keep Dominican's lead from growing. Tomutiu tried to generate a couple of opportunities to tie the game in the final minutes but the stingy Penguin backline frustrated him into weak shots that Nestor was able to easily gather up and secure the shutout.
Dominican will head back on the road as it takes on Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. PDT at Cougar Soccer Field in Azusa, California.
