IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican softball opened its first trip to the PacWest Championships with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded Biola on Wednesday at Golden Eagle Field.
Tiare Guerrero led the Penguins (32-22) from the plate going 2-for-4 with a stolen base while
Taylor Eby went 1-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice to reach safely in each of her official at bats.
Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez pitched 2.1 innings in relief not allowing an earned run to lead Dominican from the circle. Raquel Reyes (11-4) earned the win for the Eagles (38-17) pitching 6.0 innings of shutout ball and scrambling four hits.
Jackie Ibarra singled to second base as her speed took advantage of a slow transfer to lead off the game for Biola and Alexa Medley singled into shallow center to move her into scoring position.
Morgan Saucedo snagged a line drive for the first out and
Taylor Rodriguez caught a batter looking for the second out, but a single by Reyes loaded the bases. Mikala Huskey and Maddie Granados singled to bring in a pair of unearned runs for the 2-0 lead.
Rodriguez singled up the middle to lead off the top of the second with pinch runner
Alexis Abalos entering and taking second on a sacrifice bunt.
Melissa Garcia drew a walk but Reyes worked her way out of the jam with a strikeout and some help from Kennadie Tsue who snagged a laser back to third base for the final out of the inning.
Morgan Saucedo led off the top of the third with a single into right center, but once again Reyes left a runner in scoring position with a strikeout and a pop out.
Tsue singled on a bunt back to the pitcher and Ibarra singled down the right-field line to get some momentum back for the Eagles in the bottom of the fourth. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, Kendall Nakano singled back up the middle to bring a run home, but a good throw home from
Kelissa Lee in center made the speedy Ibarra retreat to third. Torres-Gonzalez entered in relief and caught the next batter swinging to end the inning.
Nakano singled home an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after an error allowed the speedy Tsue to reach safely. DJ Symons entered in the top of the seventh and despite giving up a single and a walk to lead off the frame, retired the next three batters to shut down any comeback attempt.
Dominican will be back in action Thursday as it takes on No. 3 seed Azusa Pacific in an elimination game at 2 p.m. at Golden Eagle Field.
