SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis claimed its first ever regular season sweep over rival Academy of Art with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Astrid Craig and
Logan Koitka got the Penguins (14-3) off to a strong start in doubles with a 6-1 victory over the Urban Knights (5-8) Paulina Alvarez and Maddie Morrow. Amelija Supulniece and Estelle Najean evened the segment for ART U with a 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles, but moments later
Gina Dudley and
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja clinced the team point for Dominican with a 6-4 win in No. 2 doubles.
A late scratch gave the Penguins another point heading into singles play for the 2-0 lead. No. 19
Audrey Rafols matched up with No. 20 Supulniece on the top court with every point and game a battle. Supulniece though had the favorable bounces to come away with a 6-2, 6-0 victory to split the season matchups between the top two singles players in the region. Vanaraja helped Dominican turn the page on the loss as she claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Georgina Parr to put her team a match victory away from the win.
Gina Dudley provided the clinching point as she utilized several outstanding returns to fend off a relentless attack from Najean on her way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 2 singles. The Penguins' Sofia Acuña and the Urban Knights' Paulina Alvarez were also engaged in a lengthy seesaw battle for every point and game in No. 4 singles, but it was Acuña who came out on top to pull away in the end for a 6-1, 6-3 victory to give Dominican the most team points they have scored against ART U. Stefani Georgieva and
Maria Gavrilov traded the first two sets with Georgieva taking set one 6-_ and Gavrilov overcoming an early deficit to win the second set 6-3. The duo continued to trade games with emotions running high in the third set with Georgieva ultimately winning the final three sets to take the 6-3 victory.
Dominican now turns its attention to the PacWest Championships in Surprise, Arizona, where it awaits its seeding and opponent at Surprise Tennis and Recquet Club. Currently the Penguins are ranked No. 4 in the conference which is the last seed that would advance automatically to the main draw beginning Thursday, April 17. The play-in bracket begins play on Wednesday, April 16.
