IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican softball and Concordia split Saturday for the second straight day with the Golden Eagles (29-10, 19-7 PacWest) claiming a 1-0 victory to open the day and the Penguins (24-18, 15-10 PacWest) claiming a 1-0 decision in the second game at Golden Eagle Stadium.
The pitchers ruled the day as
Kassidy Stetler (5-6) pitched a gem despite the loss allowing one earned run after pitching six shutout innings for Dominican. Bella Calvo claimed the pitching duel in the first game for Concordia (5-2) allowing one hit in a complete game of work.
Taylor Rodriguez (13-3) earned the victory for the Penguins in the second game with a complete game shutout while allowing three hits.
Taylor Eby claimed the lone RBI of the day for Dominican going 1-for-1 with a double and two walks in the second game.
Game one
Kate Tobola led off the day with a walk to get a runner on for the Penguins but Calvo settled in and retired the next three batters for the Golden Eagles. Stetler faced similar issues in the bottom of the first with Jessica Im drawing a walk and an error allowing a second runner on the base paths, but Stetler made sure they never advanced further retiring the next two batters to get out of the inning.
Tobla singled to left for the first hit of the game in the top of the third, but the ball never left the infield after with Calvo leaving her stranded. Im answered with a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the third before Rodriguez sat down the next two batters and Eby caught a runner stealing at second to end the frame.
Kaliya Yco proved to be the hero for Concordia as she turned on the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the sevent and sent it over the fence in deep center for a walkoff home run.
Game two
Melissa Garcia singled to left in the top of the first and advanced into scoring position for the Penguins on a groundout but Kira Morris got the next batter swinging to escape the jam. Im singled to left to lead off the bottom of the frame but Rodriguez got the next batter looking. After a walk moved Im into scoring position, Rodriguez retired the next two batters to leave the inning unscathed.
Alyssa Rue was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the second and
Karlyne Manuel entered for her as a pinch runner.
Taylor Eby doubled deep into the corner in left field to give Manuel plenty of time to round the bases and come home on the next at bat to take the 1-0 lead. Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Eby 60 feet from home, but Morris was able to keep the ball in the infield on the next at bat and exited the second without further damage.
Rodriguez retired her next six batters before Shelby Pfeiler singled to left in the bottom of the fourth, but it was a blip in the stretch as Rodriguez got the next batter looking for a groundball to second ended the inning. After a clean fifth, Im singled to right center in the bottom of the sixth but Rodriguez sat down the next three batters in order to take the slim lead into the seventh.
Yco looked to recapture her heroics from the first game as she singled on a sharp line drive back to the circle before an error allowed another runner to reach safely with one out.
Morgan Saucedo quickly ended the game two pitches later as she scooped up a groundball tagged a runner on her way to second before tossing the ball over to first for the game-ending double play.
Dominican will stay in Southern California to make up a rained out doubleheader with Azusa Pacific on Monday beginning at noon PDT at Cougar Softball Field.
