SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis continued to ride its singles play to victories as it topped Hawai'i Pacific 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Abbott Tennis Center.
Doulbes play was close in all three matches but it was the Sharks (4-8) who edged their way to the point as Rosa Viller Moller and Sandra Redak took No. 3 doubles 6-4 and Sayda Hernandez and Annika Hakovirta won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (4) to clinch the point in No. 2 doubles. No. 48
Audrey Rafols and
Gina Dudley had a 6-5 lead when the point was clinched and left the match unfinished on the top court.
The Penguins (8-2) quickly flipped the momentum as
Astrid Craig won 6-4, 6-1 over Viller Moller in No. 6 singles. Sofia Acuña kept it rolling moments later with a. 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over Jayanne Palma to take the lead. No. 22
Maria Gavrilov overcame a slow start against Emily Castillo to win 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 to put Dominican a point from the clinch.
For the second consecutive day it was No. 18 Rafols who closed out the victory for the Penguins was she battled through several close games to win 6-2, 6-4 over Evi Roobol on the top court. It marked the first time in nine tries that the Penguins topped HPU after two close calls one year ago. With the match in hand, Dudley retired early as she continued to fight through injury to compete. Annika Hakovirta held on for a close 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 victory for the final point for HPU.
Dominican will take on Concordia University Irvine on Monday as it takes its Southern California road trip to Los Angeles at CUI Tennis Courts.
