SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Taylor Rodriguez earned the victory from the circle and drove home the winning run for Dominican softball in a 4-1 victory over Chaminade on Tuesday at Penguin Field.
Rodriguez struck out five in a complete game of work to move to 8-2 on the year while going 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run and two RBI for the Penguins (18-14, 9-7 PacWest).
Leslie Ruiz also went 2-for-3 from the plate for Dominican with an RBI, while
Tiare Guerrero added a 1-for-3 day with a double and two runs scored. Miranda Diaz provided the full offense for the Silverswords (4-29, 3-15 PacWest) with a 1-for-2 plate performance with a home run.
After the pitchers controlled the first two innings Diaz gave Chaminade the lead as she homered to straightaway center with two outs to take the 1-0 lead in the third.
Melissa Garcia doubled to right field for the Penguins in the bottom of the third with one out, but Alena Frost tracked down a line drive in left and caught Garcia off the bag for the inning-ending double play.
Rodriguez made quick work of the side in the top of the fourth with a pair of strikeouts and Guerrero slapped a ball into shallow left center beating the throw to second for a lead off double in the bottom of the inning. Guerrero moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout to third. Rodriguez stepped to the plate next and homered to center field to take the 2-1 lead.
Rodriguez continued to hold Chaminade in check over the next two innings and Guerrero once again reached safely on an error to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
Annabelle Burke singled up the middle to move her into scoring position. With runners on second and third, Rodriguez singled through the right side to bring home Guerrero and Ruiz singled off the bag at third base to bring home another for the 4-1 lead. Rodriguez needed eight pitches in the seventh to retire the side and take home the victory.
