Offensive explosion powers Penguins to victory

IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball had its best offensive game of the season as it defeated Concordia University Irvine 91-53 Saturday afternoon at CU Arena. 

The win moved the Penguins to 20-11and 14-6 in the PacWest on the season, marking the first time in their NCAA Division II era that they surpassed the 20-win mark in back-to-back seasons. Five Dominican players scored in double-digits topped by Abigail Cooper's 21 points. Alaiyah San Juan added 16 points and five rebounds, while Taylor Linzie finished with a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds to go with four steals. Erika Maggard led the Golden Eagles (5-22, 4-16 PacWest) with a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds. 

The Penguins opened the game attacking the paint to get out to a 6-2 lead. After trading several points, Kaylyn Buchanon-Lamb sparked a 7-0 run as she drove to the hoop for back-to-back layups before San Juan found Alyssa Alvarado on a cross-court pass for a 3-pointer to take the 15-6 lead with 2:20 left in the period. Mikayla Amoroso extended the lead to double-digits for the first time as she knocked down a shot from the top of the arc and Dominican took the 20-9 lead into the second quarter.

The Penguins continued to run its offense through the paint as Cooper and Linzie helped push the lead to 13 with a pair of layups early in the new quarter. The Eagles were able to close back within single digits as Caylee Santos knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 29-20 with six minutes left in the half. After three minutes trading buckets, San Juan knocked down a shot behind the arc and Cooper worked her way inside to begin to expand the lead once more. After Linzie swiped the ball on the defensive end, she threw it ahead to Alvarado for a fastbreak layup to push the Penguins game-high lead to 16 with1:24 remaining. Izzy Navarro knocked down a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to cut the Dominican lead to 47-34.

Cooper led another run to start the second half as she scored five points including a stepback jumper to cap the 9-point swing that extended the Penguin lead to 58-38 with 5:43 remaining in the third. San Juan crossed over a defender and buried a 3-pointer from the left elbow to highlight another run before stepping back from the same spot at the buzzer to take a 72-46 lead into the fourth.

Alvarado and Andraya Perez hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 80-51 with seven minutes left on the clock. Buchanon-Lamb knocked down a pair form the charity stripe moments later to push the lead over 30 and Dominican cruised to its 20th victory of the season.

Dominican will return home to host the PacWest Championships beginning Thursday next week. The Penguins seed will be determined today as they will be the No. 3 seed with a Westmont loss or the No. 4 seed with a Warrior win.
