Rodriguez shuts out Urban Knights

BRISBANE, Calif. – Dominican softball took the season series against Academy of Art with a 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Mission Blue Field.

Taylor Rodriguez moved to 6-0 on the season after pitching her second complete game shutout of the year for the Penguins (13-9, 5-3 PacWest). Rodriguez helped her own cause as she went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Alyssa Rue also finished 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI, while Kate Tobola finished 2-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored.

Kate Tobola singled up the middle to lead off the game moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch. Alyssa Rue brought her home on a deep fly ball to left field to give Dominican the 1-0 lead. Tiare Guerrero made back-to-back spectacular grabs for Dominican as she ended the bottom of the first securing a line drive before leaping to grab the first out of the bottom of the second on another soft line drive as Rodriguez kept the Urban Knights (2-15, 1-3 PacWest) scoreless through two.

Guerrero singled through the left side and Annabelle Burke walked in the top of the third to put a pair of runners on the base paths. Rodriguez fought off a couple of pitches on an 0-2 count and then doubled to left center to bring home both runners and extend the lead to 3-0.

Rodriguez continued to hold the Urban Knights in check and in the top of the fifth Tobola singled to center and Guerrero reached on an error to put two on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position, Rue collected her second sacrifice fly of the game to bring home Tobola for the 4-0 lead.

Alicia Garcia and Alyssa Rue doubled on back-to-back pitches to lead off the top of the seventh to add to the lead with Rue eventually crossing the plate on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.  Rodriguez made quick work of the ART U side in the bottom of the seventh to finish off her shutout.

Dominican will remain in the Bay Area as it heads across the Richmond Bridge to take on Cal State East Bay in a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at noon PST at Pioneer Softball Field.
