FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis completed its opening week of play with a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon over Fresno Pacific at Haak Tennis Complex.
The Penguins (2-1) started strong as
Deepalakshmi Vanaraja and
Astrid Craig won No. 3 doubles 6-0. The Sunbirds (0-2) though found a groove as Halle Faherty and Margarita Munoz claimed the second court 6-3 and moments later Yume Ueoku and Daimy Paula claimed No. 1 doubles 6-3 as well to give FPU the 1-0 lead in the match.
Dominican gathered itself in the break and took the singles by storm as
Logan Koitka won 6-0, 6-0 on the sixth court to tie the team score. Sofia Acuña wasn't far behind with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Munoz to push the Penguins into the lead as a team.
Maria Gavrilov was victorious 6-2, 6-2 and
Gina Dudley claimed No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1 as Dominican quickly clinched the match. Vanaraja held off Malia Mitchell 7-5 in the first set and then claimed a 6-2 victory in the second to capture the last team point of the match for Dominican.
The Penguins will continue it's local road trek as it visit Academy of Art on Friday for a match at The Club at Livermore at 10 a.m. PST.
