Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Penguins sail past Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's basketball rode its defense and rebounding for the second straight game to a 64-41 victory Saturday afternoon over Biola at the Conlan Recreation Center.

Taylor Linzie had her second straight dominant double-double for the Penguins (17-9, 11-4 PacWest) with 14 points and 23 rebounds. Alaiyah San Juan also scored 14 points while dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds. Kaylen Kamelamela led the Eagles (7-17, 7-9 PacWest) with 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals.  Dominican held Biola to 26.7% shooting and held a 52-33 advantage on the glass.

The game got off to a slow start as each team recorded a make in the paint after nearly three, scoreless minutes. San Juan then began to heat up as Adia Walker found her at the top of the arc for a 3-pointer to push the lead to 6-2. Linzie made her presence felt early and often on the offensive glass capping the 8-0 run with a rebound and a putback to take the 10-2 lead with 3:43 remaining. Biola went on a 7-1 run to cut the gap to two points on a Sydney Moran 3-pointer, but Mikayla Amoroso connected on a short jumper and Jazmine Barnes knocked down a pair of free throws to extend the Dominican lead to 15-9 at the quarter break.

The run continued into the second half as San Juan swooped down the lane for an acrobatic layup through contact to open the scoring. San Juan then kicked the ball out on her next drive to Alyssa Alvarado behind the arc before making a 3-pointer of her own to make it 23-9 with 8:29 left in the half. Jaya Michel came off the bench and scored four quick points for the Eagles and Kamelamela laid it in to cut their deficit to single digits at 23-15 with 4:30 remaining. San Juan kicked the ball out to Adia Walker for a 3-pointer from the right corner to halt the momentum before Kaylyn Buchanon-Lamb found Andraya Perez in the left corner for another 3-pointer for the Penguins. San Juan finished the half in style as she dropped back-to-back dimes in transition to Walker and Buchanon-Lamb for easy layups and Dominican took a 33-17 lead into the locker room.

Linzie pushed the run to 9-0 to open the second half as she stole the ball on one end and then gathered an offensive rebound and a layup in the front court. Kamelamela connected on a 3-pointer to briefly dampen the Penguins momentum and Jaycee Goldsmith connected on a pair of shots from the charity stripe to cut the Eagles deficit to 35-22 with 8:20 left in the third. The teams traded points for the next three minutes until Linzie worked down low for back-to-back layups to spark a 10-point run that pushed the Dominican lead to 52-29 with 1:53 remaining. The Eagles scored the last seven points of the quarter as Laila Walker stepped back for a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 16 points heading to the fourth.

Linzie once again made her presence felt with multiple offensive rebounds to start the final period and she scored the first five points of the quarter as she pushed the lead back to over 20 for the Penguins. Dominican's defense was on point not allowing a point by Biola until Henley laid it in with 3:50 remaining in the quarter and the Penguins cruised to victory.

Dominican will continue its homestand Thursday as it takes on Hawai'i Pacific at 5:30 p.m. PST at the Conlan Rec Center.
