SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball wrapped up their home slate of the schedule Wednesday night against the Vulcans of Hawaii Hilo.
Jett Snure,
Jordan Archie, and
Nathan Ilunga were honored before the game for Senior Day.
The Vulcans offense wasted no time settling in as they jumped out to an early 8-0 lead led by Julio Montes II who collected five quick points. Dominican was able to halt the momentum by forcing the ball inside and working their big men.
Sargent Jeffery got the Penguins on the board when he found some space in the paint and finished with a strong lay-up.
When the three ball is falling, the Pengs are a dangerous offense to contain, and they started dropping midway through the first half.
Omari Davis,
Jorge Ochoa and senior
Nathan Ilunga all showed their range from deep collecting a trey a piece which resulted in them grabbing a five-point lead. Ochoa gave the Vulcans defense fits in the first half as he led the Pengs in the scoring department going for 11 points.
DM Sanders and Davis fueled a mini run to end the half with Sanders stepping back and draining a long ball while Davis got the crowd to their feet with an emphatic put back slam.
Dominican would go into the lockers trailing by six and would come out for the second half with the same offensive mentality they started the game with. Driving the ball inside and scoring down low.
Jeffery beat his man down low much like in the first half and commanded the ball finishing it off with a nice sky hook. Then on the ensuing offensive possession
Darius Best drove the ball hard forcing the Hilo defense to send him to the line where he knocked down a pair of free throws.
The Pengs would put a scare to the Vulcans to start the second half, but Hilo found their rhythm coming out victorious in this one 96-68. Dominican will now hit the road for two games starting at
