SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's lacrosse finished off their perfect weekend with a 16-8 victory over the visitors from Fort Lewis College. The Pengs are now a clean 3-0 to begin their new era which includes being an official member of the NCAA and the MEC Conference.
Sophomore
Julianne Lane got the scoring started for the Pengs when she took advantage of the Skyhawks being a man down putting one in the back of the net to tie things up at one. Fort Lewis would make things challenging early on as their defense frustrated Dominican. Senior leader
Brooke Vafi would break through in the final seconds of the first period finding a hole in the defense for an unassisted goal.
Vafi gave the Skyhawks defense fits throughout the match finishing with a game high four goals to go along with four ground balls. She would score again late in the second off a nice dish from teammate
Morgan Newkirk. Newkirk, fresh off winning MEC offensive player of the week, was right behind Vafi with three goals. Dominican would hold an 8-5 heading into halftime.
The Pengs offense would catch fire in the second half as they tallied another eight goals and two of those were deposited by junior
Olivia Johnson. Johnson would open the third period with what easily could be a candidate for goal of the year when she received the ball from
Taylor Pieri and twirled her stick behind her back for the goal leaving her teammates and the opposing goalkeeper speechless.
Pieri, who has been finding teammates left and right to begin the season, finished the game with a team high three assists.
Dominican will now hit the road as they travel to University of Findlay Mar. 9
th at 3 p.m. CDT.
