ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican softball fell to Sonoma State 8-0 and 6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Softball Field.
Not much went right for the Penguins (8-6) in the first game of the day, while
Melissa Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI and
Leslie Ruiz added a pinch hit double with two RBI in the second game to lead the offense.
Charlie Johnson was the story of the first game for the Seawolves (10-5) as she pitched a complete game no-hitter to lead her team. Five different players recorded an RBI for Sonoma State led by Taylor Rapp who opened the scoring in the first on a single through the left side to score one and then added a second RBI on a single in the third.
Dominican found offensive success early in the second game as Garcia singled to second base to lead off the game.
Annabelle Burke and
Alyssa Rue walked to load the bases, but the Seawolves defense helped Alexis Camberos escape the jam as Kaiya Dickens secured a line drive to second to end the frame.
After
Nayellys Torres-Gonzalez held the Seawolves in check in the bottom of the first with a pair of strikeouts,
Karlyne Manuel singled to center to lead off the second for her first hit as a Penguin. Manuel stole second and Garcia stepped to the plate with two outs and put the Dominican on the board for the first time as she singled to center to bring home Manuel for the 1-0 lead.
The Penguins held the lead into the third when the Seawolves found some offensive juice as Jasmine Moreno drove in the tying run on a single to center and Iris Bejarano drove in two more to take the lead as Sonoma carried a 4-1 lead into the fourth. SSU added a pair to its lead in the bottom of the fourth and Dominican looked for answers.
A pair of walks in the top of the sixth had things headed in the right direction and Ruiz entered and doubled to right center to bring home both runners to cut the lead to 6-3. Garcia walked to bring the tying run to the plate, but Ava Paquin entered the circle and helped the Seawolves out of the inning as she induced a flyout to center.
Dominican will head home for the first time this season as it opens conference play against Vanguard on Friday at Penguin Field. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon PST with the second game starting at approximately 2:30 p.m.
