Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Penguins hold on late, secure victory over the Griffins

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's lacrosse kept the good times rolling Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Griffins of Westminster University 12-9 to record their second straight NCAA victory. Junior Morgan Newkirk led the Penguins offense in this one netting four goals on the day.

The offense as a whole couldn't be stopped early on as Dominican jumped out to an 8-0 lead midway through the second period. Newkirk led the early charge with three goals while fellow junior Taylor Pieri snuck past the Griffins defense for two goals of her own.

Westminster would get on the board a couple minutes before halftime, but the Dominican duo of Kyra Evans and Olivia Johnson would halt the Griffins momentum. Evans, the freshman out of San Diego has been a spark plug for the Pengs to begin the season facilitating the offense. Just before half, Evans found a streaking Johnson who finished the play with a beautiful shot past the goalie.

Evans would finish the game with a team high three assists while Johnson flashed her versatility with a couple of goals and the team leader in ground balls with five. Dominican would hold a seven-point advantage going into the last period, but the Griffins wouldn't go down easy. Their offense would score four straight to cut the Pengs lead down to three with three minutes left.

With the game on the line, the Pengs turned to one of their leaders to ice the game. Johnson who was everywhere on the field, stepped in and won a crucial draw. Then on the ensuing possession received a nice dish from Pieri and whizzed the ball past the outstretched arms of the goalie for Dominican's 12th point.

The Pengs will be back on the field Feb. 18th to conclude their home stand with a match-up against Fort Lewis College.
