SAN RAFAEL, CALIF. Dominican men's basketball defeated the Bobcats of UC Merced Tuesday night 74 to 60 improving their record to 4-1.
Nick Medeiros led the way offensively for the Pengs as he went for a team high 17 points on an efficient 8 for 10 from the field.
Senior leader
Darius Best got the Pengs rolling to begin the game in this one as he eased his way in the lane for a driving lay-up. Then on the ensuing offensive possession, Best showed off his mid-range with a sweet looking jumper. Dominican's offense as a whole was clicking from the jump as they gained a 15-4 lead led by Best and a couple treys made by
Austin Johnson forcing the Bobcats to use a timeout.
Coming out of that timeout the Penguins turned up the defensive pressure as Best who tore up the Bobcats defense early on collected a trio of steals on the other end.
Jorge Ochoa and
Stephen Ransom protected the paint each swatting away a couple of blocks. Ransom, the senior out of Vallejo, ended the half strong with some hustle rebounds. On the offensive side he had the last couple of buckets for the Pengs including a breakaway slam giving Dominican a 13-point cushion going into half.
Sargent Jeffery, the Nevada native, started the second half strong for the Pengs as he commanded the ball down low, and his teammates gave it to him. Jeffery found a mismatch in the paint and took advantage of it going for a quick six points out of half. Medeiros, the senior point guard followed in Jeffery's suit by finding soft spots in the Bobcats defense. He walked into a wide-open trey midway through the second half then showed off his sweet jumper a couple plays later.
The Bobcats wouldn't go away easy as they went on a run of their own led by Sterling McClanahan who was the offense for UC Merced. He would hit a couple threes to cut it to a 11-point deficit. However, the duo of
Darius Best and Ransom would put an end to the Bobcats momentum with Best collecting a couple of points from his sweet looking jumpers. Ransom would clean up some of the offensive rebounds and cleaned them up for a couple easy lay-ins.
Best would finish the night second on the team with 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds while
Austin Johnson was right behind him collecting 11 points.
The Penguins will be back on the court Nov. 29
th at 8 pm when they host Lincoln College.
