Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dominican battles Stanislaus State tough

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball (3-1) dropped their first game of the season in a hard-fought battle with the Warriors of Stanislaus State Saturday night. For the second straight game, Dominican had five players post 10 or more points but it was the Warriors who would squeak out a 93-89 victory.

Senior Jorge Ochoa got the night started for the Pengs when he found some space for a pull-up jumper. A couple possessions later he would knock down a three-ball assisted on the play by teammate Darius Best. Ochoa would finish the night with 12 points while serving up two blocks on the opposite end. Much of the first half was back-and-forth with the Warriors getting solid contributions from Donjae Lindsey and Daniel Ameyaw.

Towards the end of the half Dominican made it an emphasis to get the ball down low. Sargent Jeffery, the redshirt junior out of Las Vegas, answered the call and showed off his arsenal of post moves.
The Warriors had no answer for Jeffery who pounded them down low all game. He finished the night with a game high 19 points on an efficient 9 for 12 from the field.

The Penguins had some catching up to do to start the second half as they came back on the court down 11, but their defense helped flipped the switch. Dominican would get out in transition after their defensive pressure forced a couple of steals. Darius Best and Nick Medeiros helped Jeffery in the scoring department as they finished with 17 points and 12 points. Michael Wilson rounded out the scorers in double-figures for the Pengs as he posted 10 points.

Late in the second half Dominican had cut the Warriors lead down to six points led by a charge from Austin Johnson and Stephen Ransom who both subbed in and brough some extra juice. Ransom had a couple of hustle rebounds he converted into points while Johnson hit some timely three-pointers to narrow the deficit. Then with a minute to go, Medeiros came up with a huge steal he quickly turned into two-points finishing on a sweet jumper cutting the Warriors lead to one. However, the Warriors would make their free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

The Penguins will be back on the court Nov. 25th when they host UC Merced at 7:3
