SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball continued their hot start to the season as they routed the Keelhaulers of Cal Maritime 95 to 65. The Penguins (3-0) led with their offense Wednesday night as the wealth was spread around with five players finishing with 10 or more points.
Nick Medeiros and
Michael Wilson paced Dominican in the offensive department going for 17 points apiece.
Wilson, the junior out of Sacramento, collected the first points of the night for the Penguins when his hustle paid off jumping in for an offensive rebound and then putting it back for a tip-in lay-up. Then Wilson would setup fellow teammate
Jorge Ochoa for a wide-open trey a couple possessions later. Cal Maritime would respond however going on a little run of their own sparked by Nick Stone who got by the Penguin defense on back-to-back series.
Wilson ended the Keelhaulers momentum midway through the first half with a driving lay-up that ignited a Penguin 8-0 run.
Stephen Ransom, the defensive enforcer down low, followed in Wilson's footsteps on the ensuing Pengs possession with a fancy lay-up. With the Penguins offense clicking their defense started to follow suit as they swarmed the Keelhaulers forcing them into bad passes resulting in steals. A couple of these steals ended with the Pengs getting easy buckets in transition including a breakaway highlight alley-oop thrown by
Darius Best and finished off with sweet looking dunk by
Austin Johnson.Â
Nick Medeiros, the Vallejo native, would cap off an impressive first half for Dominican as he showed off his range knocking down a pair of long-balls. Heading into the lockers for half Wilson and Medeiros were the leading scorers on both sides with both in double-digits.Â
In the second half, the Penguins continued the defensive intensity only allowing Cal Maritime to shoot a combined 36% from the field. Senior
Jorge Ochoa got hot in the second half finishing with 15 points while going an efficient 5 for 8 from the field. Speaking about defense, fellow senior
Stephen Ransom continued to protect the glass as he swatted away a game high four blocks. Ransom and Johnson would round out the scorers in double figures for the Pengs with both finishing with 10.
Dominican will be back on the court Nov. 22
nd when they welcome in Stanislaus State at 3:30 pm.
