IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer tied with CUI 1-1 to conclude its first trip to Southern California on Saturday at Golden Eagles Field.
The game was largely contested in the midfield with the Golden Eagles (6-1-2, 1-0-1 PacWest) taking several long shots to have a 19-5 edge in total shots with an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
Megan Clapinski scored her fifth goal of the season for the Penguins (4-1-5, 2-1-1 PacWest).
Sloane De Torres took a shot in the 10th minute on a free kick for CUI 2-yards outside the box and went over the wall, but it was
Angelina Hert who leapt and pushed the ball away from any threat. The Penguins made a good run into their attacking third in the 20th minute with
Janae Schwan making a move past a defender at the top of the box before taking a shot at goal that went high.
Ayla Moore had the first shot on frame for the Penguins as she worked a combination play down the left side with the return pass finding her in the box but her header towards the near post was gathered in by Riley Urquiza for the save.
The defenses continued to limit opportunities for both squads into the second half. The Golden Eagles earned a free kick near the top left corner of the box in the 61st minute but the original serve was knocked out and around until Avery Munoz made a charging shot from just outside the box that found the hands of Hert who parried it to her left and her backline cleared the ball out of danger. Hert bested CUI twice more as she protected her near post on a shot by Bella Barrett before collecting a high header from Ellie Soleau in the 66th minute.
The best chance for either team came in the 72nd minute as Chloe Imperali beat a defender inside the right-side of the box and went near post but Hert made the save. The ball bounced high coming to rest in from of Soleau who sent the ball towards the net but a defender stood in the way and headed the ball away from the line to keep the game tied. Despite being limited for most of the second half, Dominican took advantage of a disorganized backline by the Golden Eagles as
Carson Warfield served a ball into the box to find Clapinski all alone with two other Penguins as the defenders looked for a flag and Clapinski easily beat the keeper far post for the 1-0 lead. De Torres tied the game in the 86th minute as a low free kick bounced in front of Hert and skipped to the left past her into the back netting. Dominican had a couple desperation shots in the final minute with
Brisa Navarrete forcing Urquiza to make one final save with three seconds remaining to preserve the tie.
Dominican will have a week off before turning its attention to Menlo as the teams face each other for the first time this season in a non-conference game Saturday at 11 a.m. at Wunderlich Field in Atherton.
