ARCATA, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer scored two second half goals to pull away from Cal Poly Humboldt for a 2-0 victory Sunday at College Creek Field.
The Penguins (2-0-0) held an 18-14 advantage in shots and a 12-7 edge in shots on goal over the Jacks (0-1-1).
Alejandro Reyes tallied his first shutout of the season as he collected seven saves.
Dominican peppered Adrian Gallardo's net early on as it tallied five shots in the opening 14 minutes with two on net before Humboldt managed their first quality chance in the 15th minute but Reyes was there to make the kick save.
Drew Swenson slipped through the Jacks' defense finding space on the top right of the box and ripped a shot towards the far post that Gallardo was able to dive and parry aside to keep a clean net.
The game settled in from there with the next chance for Dominican coming in the 34th minute when
Norman Tellez slipped a ball into Porter and Porter's shot was blocked by a sliding Gallardo. Humboldt had one last chance of their own in the final 15 seconds on a counter where Paris Ruiz was able to loose a shot that Reyes kicked wide of his net to send the game into the half tied 0-0.
The Penguins continued to press in the second half as Gallardo misplayed a pass straight to the foot of a Penguin and
Freddie Allen ripped a shot on frame that Gallardo was able to just get his hands on in the 65th minute.
Cole Porter was then played into the box and got off another shot the Gallardo pushed to his right to the foot of
Chris Mendez-Lemus who buried it in the back netting for the 1-0 lead.
Dominican struck again in the 79th minute as it found a ball in space down the right side of the field and
Diego Grande flicked on a cross to
Lex Bernier who took one touch and ripped a shot into the top-right corner for the 2-0 lead. It was Bernier's second goal of the weekend and while Humboldt finally found some momentum on offense over the final 11 minutes of the game, Reyes made three saves for the shutout victory.
