FRESNO, Calif.- Dominican women's volleyball opened the first Saturday of the regular season with a double-header. It was an early morning for the Penguins as they faced off against Chico State at 9 a.m. then later in the day matched up against Stanislaus State. The Penguins will be back in action next Friday Sep. 13
th at the Stan State Tournament where they will tango with Chico State at 7:30 p.m.
DUC 1, Chico State 3
It was an early start for the Penguins, but they fought hard until the last point. Dominican's offense was humming in this one as three players would collect double-digit kills.
Avery Schneider,
Ashlyn Daugherty, and
Braenwynne Matthews led the Penguins with 10 kills each. Freshman
Kali Young who had an impressive collegiate debut last night against Jessup, was second on the team with nine kills while digging up eight digs.
Chico State started this match fast winning the first two sets, but the Penguins didn't give in. Dominican flipped the switch in the third set and jumped out to an early lead which set the tone for the rest of the set. Rivers, who had 44 assists in last night's match against Jessup, continued to feed her teammates with good looks in this one against the Wildcat's. She would finish the match with a game high 35 assists and 13 digs.
Matthews collected three aces in the third set to help push the Penguins lead to three midway through the set. The Idaho native would finish with four aces to go along with her 10 kills. Young who has been a bright spot early on for Dominican slammed home a ferocious kill to wrap up the third set.
Rein Bocage, the Stanislaus State transfer, has been a spark plug for the Penguins as she tied with Rivers for a game high 13 digs. Junior
Kendal Kibanoff and Young were right behind them finishing the match with 8 digs a piece.
DUC 0, Stan State 3
Dominican wrapped up their opening weekend with a match-up against the Warriors of Stanislaus State. There was a youth movement to begin the match for the Penguins as Coach Loesch went with three freshmen in his starting lineup. The trio of
Kali Young,
Reese Bozak, and
Chloe Cruz gave the Penguins a new look and they didn't disappoint.
Young, the freshman from South Carolina, continued her strong opening weekend collecting a team high 10 kills. Dominican as a team would finish with 26 kills against the Warriors. Fellow freshman Cruz was setting up her teammates all match dishing out eight assists which was a team high. Bozak gave the Penguins length up front which altered many Warriors attacks, and she also collected three kills.
Senior
Rein Bocage, playing against her former team, led the Penguins in digs with 19 which was also a team high.
