Pengs wrap up Hawaiian road-trip

HONOLULU, Hawaii- Dominican women's volleyball squared off against the No. 7 ranked Chaminade Silverswords on Friday night to cap off their Hawaiian road-trip. The Penguins were playing for the second straight day after picking up a conference opening victory last night at HPU. Dominican fought the Silverswords tough all night, but Chaminade was able to come out on top winning this match 3 sets to 0.

Dominican showed no sign of tired legs as they were able to keep up with the Silverswords in the first set. Junior Avery Schneider got the scoring started for the Penguins as she slammed home a kill dished out by senior Camille Rivers. Schneider would finish the night with seven kills while Rivers collected a team-high 18 assists.

Midway through the first set, the Penguins had Chaminade sweating as they jumped out to an 18 to 14 lead. Juniors Schneider and Lauren Wiley had back-to-back kills for the Penguins followed by an ace from Rivers forced the Silverswords to call a timeout. Dominican kept it close throughout the set even having set point after graduate student Reagan Macha throw down an emphatic kill. Macha would finish the night with a game-high 12 kills and two blocks.

Despite losing the first two sets, Dominican fought until the final point. A couple of freshmen got off to a quick start in the third set for the Penguins. Reese Bozak took a great pass from Rivers and converted it into a one-point lead while Chloe Cruz was all over the court dishing out one of her eight assists on the night. Both teams would go back-and-forth throughout the last set, but Chaminade was able to pull away late winning 25 to 23.

Dominican will be back on the court for their home opener against cross town rival Academy of Art Thursday Sept. 26th at 5 p.m. This match will also serve as Faculty/Staff appreciation night and the first 200 fans will receive free food from Forrest Fire BBQ.
