Penguins fall to Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer made a late push to overcome a deficit but fell 2-1 Thursday afternoon to Sonoma State at Seawolf Soccer Field.

The Seawolves (1-2-2) held a 16-11 advantage in shots with a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Natalie Haro made four saves on the day for the Penguins (3-2-0) while Megan Clapinski tallied her second goal in as many games.

Sonoma State dominated the early possession tallying four shots and three corner kicks in the opening 13 minutes of play. The pressure paid off as Luna Chavez found Marivic Lek-Miro in the box for the opening goal in 14th minute of play. Dominican was able to respond building some attacks of their own as Ireland O'Donnell and Shulien Kemmler Liu were able to loose a pair of shots within seconds of each other in the 15th minute but the Seawolves' defense blocked the attempts on their way through to prevent disaster. Dominican also earned three corners over the next five minutes as it pressed for an equalizer but despite even play the rest of the way the Penguins trailed 1-0 at the break.

Sonoma State looked to extend their lead in the 51st minute when Ashley Frye found an empty spot to shoot at but a Dominican defender came to Haro's aid to make the save before the ball could cross the goal line. Clapinski tested Ariana Bedoes for the first time of the day as she found some space for a shot in 56th minute and O'Donnell added a shot on frame of her own in three minutes later, but Bedoes made a pair of saves to preserve her lead.

The Seawolves found their second goal in the 63rd minute as a combination play freed Mia Solorio-Smith for a goal. Dominican got some momentum headed back its way in the 78th minute as Clapinski cashed in on a set piece to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into the final 10 minutes of play. The Sonoma State defense did just enough down the stretch to keep the Penguins out of the back netting to preserve its victory.

Dominican will head north to take on Simpson on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Simpson Soccer Field in Redding, California.
