Penguins fall in final match of Stanislaus State Volleyball Tournament

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-10) Saturday night to Stanisaus State at the Stanislaus State Volleyball Tournament at Fitzpatrick Arena.

Braenwynne Matthews led the Penguins with seven kills, while Rein Bocage finished with 20 digs and one ace. Isabella Saucedo had 17 kills to lead the Warriors as their team finished with a .294 hitting percentage.

Dominican started strong as Matthews provided the exclamation point on a 4-1 run that gave the Penguins a 7-6 lead. Reagan Macha and Kali Young then found the floor on back-to-back swings to finish off another 4-1 run that helped Dominican take a 13-11 lead near the midway point of the set. Stanislaus State had other ideas as they put together a 7-1 run on the back of some strong blocking at the net that accounted for three points in the run. After the Warriors extended their lead to 20-15, the Penguins began their march back led by  Reagan Macha who found the floor three times in a 6-1 run that tied the set at 21. The teams traded 2-point burst with Bocage serving up an ace to tie the set once again 23-23, but a kill by Saucedo and another Stanislaus State block secured the opening set victory.

The Warriors rode their momentum into the second set as they opened on a 5-1 run. Melena Wong served up an ace and then set Ashlyn Daugherty for a kill to finish a 3-point burst that closed the gap to one, but another 5-1 run for Stanislaus State pushed the lead to 11-6. The Warriors' offense began to hum on all cylinders as they continued to build on the lead on the way to a 2-0 lead in the match.

Stanislaus State continued to find success in the third opening on a 10-1 run as it ran away with the sweep.

Dominican will travel across the Pacific to begin its Hawaiian road trip as it takes on Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m. HST at the Shark Tank.
