Penguins fall to Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball could not hold a late lead falling in both games of Fridays doubleheader 5-0 and 3-2 to Biola at Penguin Field.

Tiare Guerrero led the Penguins (17-18, 10-10 PacWest) at the plate in the second game going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored. Morgan Saucedo was the only player to register a hit in both games finishing 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

The Eagles (12-18, 7-10 PacWest) jumped ahead early in the first game as they strung together five singles in the inning with Abie Novak, Raylene Roybal and Kaitlyn Hawkins each driving in a run to take the 3-0 lead. Kayla Bousquette took it from there as she held Dominican without a hit until the bottom of the seventh to earn the victory from the circle.

Tiare Guerrero singled on a bunt down the third-base line to lead off the second game advancing to second on an errant throw to first before beating a throw to third on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. After Olivia Lee stole second, Guerrero scored on a groundout to second and Lee came home on a wild pitch to take the 2-0 lead.

Jackie Ibarra looked like she might get a run back for Biola in the top of the third as she singled to third base before moving to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. Nowak then sent a ball to right field in what looked like a sure single but Lee made a diving catch to end the inning and prevent the run from scoring.

Dominican continued to hold the lead until the top of the seventh. Kennadie Tsue led off the seventh with a blooper that landed in between third and short and advanced to second on a collision between the two players attempting to make the play. Alexa Medley then sent a ball back to the circle but Shelby Keltner was only able to get the tip of her glove on it and the ball ricocheted away from short to put runners on the corners. Nowak then sent a towering shot to right field that Lee brought back over the wall but could not hold on to the catch pinning it against the fence as a run scored on the double. The Eagles then scored two more on back-to-back sacrifice flies to take the 3-2 lead.

Guerrero singled and stole second to lead off the seventh but Roybal closed out the victory as she retired the next three batters in order.

Dominican will return to the diamond Saturday looking to earn a series split in a doubleheader with Biola beginning at noon PDT at Penguin Field.
