Penguins fall to top-seeded Sea Lions

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Dominican women's tennis fell 4-0 to top-seeded and No. 30 Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday at the PacWest Tennis Championships at Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
 
Amanda Letzring and Quin Brady gave the Sea Lions (16-3) the early lead as the took No. 2 doubles 6-1. Anna Pallencaoe and Jazlyn Miyamura added a 6-2 victory in No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles point leaving a seesaw battle at the top spot unfinished.
 
Arianna Aduelo secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 3 singles for PLNU with Brady close behind with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 4 singles. With the team victory a single point away for the Sea Lions, the remaining matches were close. No. 52 Audrey Rafols held off No. 27 Letzring for a 7-6 (3) victory in the opening set on the top court for the Penguins (12-7), while Gina Dudley lost a tight first set in No. 2 doubles 6-4. Carolina Guerrero took an early lead in No. 5 singles and maintained it to a 4-3 advantage in the opening set, but Pallencaoe battled back and took the final three games to secure the opening set win. Pallencaoe took the second set 6-1 to secure the clinch for PLNU.
 
Astrid Craig bounced back from a 7-5 loss in the first set at No. 6 before winning 6-3 in the second set to be the only other player from Dominican to claim a set, while Dudley led 3-2 in the unfinished match at No. 2 singles.
 
The Penguins will face Hawai'i Pacific in the consolation bracket as their season continues Friday at 1 p.m. at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club.
