HONOLULU – Dominican softball dropped its first two games against Chaminade 9-2 and 9-4 Friday afternoon at Silversword Field at Sand Island Park.
The Penguins (12-10, 7-7 PacWest) hit well as
Tiare Guerrero went 4-for-7 with four runs scored.
Olivia Lee went 5-for-8 with two RBI and
Alyssa Rue was 2-for-4 with one RBI. Dominican finished with 19 hits on the day but could not slow down the Silverswords (7-5, 4-0 PacWest) offense.
Game one
Guerrero drew a walk to lead off the game and Rue singled to center to move her into scoring position.
Taylor Rodriguez hit a towering shot to deep left field that tipped off the glove of the sprinting fielder and to the base of the wall allowing Guerrero to come in from second for the 1-0 lead.
Taryn Fujioka singled to shallow right field in the bottom of the frame swiping second and moving to third on a wild pitch. A fly ball to left brought her home to tie the game 1-1. Bailey Jacobsen tripled to right field and Desiree Bravo doubled down the third-base line to bring her home. Summer buck then singled up the middle to bring home Bravo for the 3-1 lead, advancing to second on a throw home. Fujioka singled one more home with a sharp grounder up the first base line and Keaolani Takemura-Brenner doubled to left to make it 5-1.
The Silverswords added four more runs and threatened to run-rule the Penguins, but Guerrero singled to left center and Lee singled to center field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Rue sent a long fly ball to right to bring home Guerrero to prevent the game from ending early, but Dominican could get no closer.
Game two
Dominican again got off to a strong start in the second game as Guerrero singled to third and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lee then brought her home as she singled through the right side for the 1-0 lead. Larchelle Tuifao kept the Chaminade offense humming as she homered to center field to bring in two for the 2-1 lead.
The Penguins answered right back as
Kate Tobola doubled to left and Kama Kaleikini brought her home with a single to left to tie the game. The momentum was short-lived once more as the Silverswords put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second and added two more in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-2 lead.
Taylor Eby tried to start a rally in the fifth as she tripled to right center and Guerrero reached safely on a fielder choice. Lee singled through the right side to score Eby and
Morgan Saucedo did the same to bring home Guerrero and cut the deficit to 8-4. It was as close as Dominican could get as Chaminade added one more run in the bottom of the fifth and closed out the game with stellar defense.
The Penguins will conclude their Hawaiian road trip Saturday as it takes on Chaminade in one last doubleheader beginning at Noon at Silversword Field at Sand Island Park.
