Penguins fall to Yotes

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican softball fell 4-1 Thursday afternoon to Cal State San Bernardino at Warrior Field.
 
Tiare Guerrero went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Penguins (17-15) while Shelby Keltner sent 1-for-1 with two walks. Bri Goris led the Yotes (14-11) with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
 
Dominican got off to a strong start as Guerrero singled on a bunt back to the pitcher. Taylor Rodriguez singled to left and Shelby Keltner drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Kate Tobola dropped a ball into left center to bring one run home for the 1-0 lead. CSUSB worked its way out of the jam getting one out on a base running error before a groundout to the pitcher ended the frame. Shannon Galliano singled on a hopper down the third-base line to lead off the bottom of the frame and an error on a throw to first on the following sac bunt attempt allowed her to come around for the score to tie the game. Teresei Tosi singled down the right-field line to bring home the runner that reached on the error to take the 2-1 lead.
 
Goris doubled to left field with one out in the bottom of the third and Brooke Brazill brought her home with a double to right center but was thrown out attempting to stretch it into a triple as Dominican stayed within two runs. Tosi and Goris doubled in back-to-back at bats in the bottom of the fifth to add an insurance run and Samantha Vargas was able to keep the Penguins out of scoring position the rest of the game to get the win in the circle.
 
Dominican will return to action in the Tournament of Champions Saturday afternoon with games against Saint Martin's and Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 and 4:30 p.m. respectively at Pedretti Park Field 3.
