Penguins fall in rain halted game

HILO, Hawai'i – Dominican softball fell 6-3 to University of Hawai'i at Hilo in a rain halted game Saturday morning at Vulcan Field.

Taylor Eby led the Penguins (6-8, 1-5 PacWest) going 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Mariah Hopkins added a 1-for-3 performance with an RBI. Maya Lee Saneishi delivered the clutch hit for the Vulcans (8-2, 1-1 PacWest) going 1-for-2 with a double and three RBI to provide the winning runs.

Eby doubled to the fence in left field to lead off the third and moved to third on a groundout. Eby raced to the plate on an infield grounder and slid around the tag at home to score the first run of the game and allowing Kaitlyn Aguilar to reach safely. Olivia Lee singled up the middle with two outs and Mariah Hopkins followed with a single through the right side to bring home one more for the 2-0 lead.

Lexi Tilton doubled to center in the fourth and used two wild pitches to get the Vulcans back within one run before rain halted the game in the fifth with Dominican leading 2-1. A pair of miscues by the Penguin defense in the sixth put runners on first and second with one out. Victoria Macias singled to bring home one run and tie the game and Dyoni Garcia singled to right to bring home another for the 3-2 lead.

Saneishi delivered a clutch hit in to left field that landed between three Penguins with two outs to clear the loaded bases and extend the lead to four heading to the seventh. Dominican got a strong start in the top of the seventh as Eby singled to left center and Annabelle Burke singled through the right side, but it wasn't meant to be as the offense could only bring Eby home to close the gap by one.
