Penguins split with Lumberjacks

Keltner makes history in game one

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball returned home from their 10-day Hawaii road trip for a non-conference double-header with Cal Poly Humboldt Wednesday afternoon. The Penguins would go on to take the first game behind a stellar performance from graduate student Shelby Keltner who did damage from the mound and the plate. The Lumberjacks would bounce back and take the second game.

Game one

Dominican dominated from the first pitch defeating Cal Poly Humboldt 9-2. Olivia Lee and Taylor Rodriguez wasted no time getting the Penguins on the board as they both collected RBI's in the first inning. The inning was still going when Keltner stepped into the box with the bases loaded. After battling into a 2-2 count, the Redding native got into one and sent the ball over the left-field fence for a grand-slam giving the Penguins a 6-1 lead in the first.

After putting up six runs in the first, Keltner was able to settle in and do her thing on the mound. She finished the game striking out 11 Lumberjacks while only allowing two runs, but more importantly she recorded her 500th career strikeout in the bottom of the sixth.

Game two

The Lumberjacks would bounce back from game one and take this one 6-2. The Penguins were down early trailing by four, but graduate student Kamaleinani Kaleikini got them on the board when she ripped a single to right field scoring Annabelle Burke.

In the sixth inning the Penguins had a little rally going when Lee singled to right scoring Kaleikini. The Lumberjacks pitching would tighten up and ended up stranding two penguins to end in the inning.

The Penguins are back on the field this weekend as they welcome in Academy of Art for a double-header March 16th starting at noon.
