SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican women's basketball put an end to their two-game skid as they defeated the Vulcans from Hawaii Hilo 65 to 46 Monday night. This now gives the Penguins 11 wins in conference play with three games left in the regular season.
The Penguins came out the gates strong scoring the first eight points of the game forcing the Vulcans to call an early timeout. Senior
Jenna Duley and junior
Alaiyah San Juan both knocked down the long ball during the 8-0 run.
During the two-game skid, the Penguins had been giving up too many rebounds. That wasn't the case tonight. Sophomore
Keyonee Neal grabbed eight of the 21 rebounds the Penguins had in the first half in comparison to 13 for the Vulcans. At the end, Neal collected 14 rebounds while Dominican totaled 43.
Late in the second quarter,
Olga Faasolo and
Alex Salise started to heat up. Faasolo was giving Hilo fits down low forcing them to send her to the line. She drained all her shots from the charity stripe in the quarter while Salise was money with her jump shots and added a three-pointer. Faasolo finished with 10 points while Salise went for 12 points on 5 for 7 from the field.
The largest lead in the first half for the Penguins was 14 and they never trailed in the game. The Penguins took a 12-point lead into the lockers for halftime, and started the third quarter with the same firepower they started the game with. Dominican scored the first five points of the quarter.
Junior
Mikayla Amoroso heated up after half giving the Vulcans multiple looks on defense as she knocked down a long ball while also driving the ball hard into the paint. The San Francisco native finished with 11 points while dishing out four assists.
In the fourth, Duley kept getting past the Vulcans defense with her sweet scoop lay-ups. The Rocklin native also added two three-pointers in the quarter ending the night with a game-high 16 points while also swiping two steals.
Dominican will cross the Golden Gate bridge to face Academy of Art this Thursday Feb. 22
nd at 5 p.m.
