SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –
Tiare Guerrero continued to make an impact on both sides of the ball helping Dominican softball top Simon Fraser 7-4 Sunday morning at Penguin Field.
Guerrero finished 2-for-3 with three runs and a stolen base while playing in both the outfield and infield on defense.
Melissa Garcia and
Alyssa Rue each added two hits with Garcia scoring a pair of runs and Rue tallying two RBI. Kristen Davyduke made the most of her single hit for the Red Leafs (3-6) bringing in a pair with a double.
Megan Duclos led off the game for the Simon Fraser with a bunt single down the third base line before stealing second. Cassidy Affeldt brought her home with a single through the right side for the early 1-0 lead. Guerrero answered with a single through the left side before stealing second. Guerrero moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before
Morgan Saucedo ripped a line drive back to the pitching circle that was deflected high into the air allowing Guerrero to score but Grace McMillan tracked the ball well to get the out and limit further damage.
The pitching settled in for the next two innings before Lizzy Sugrive homered to center field to give the Red Leafs back a 2-1 lead.
Alicia Garcia reached on an error in the bottom of the fourth and
Caitlyn Perales singled on to left on the very next pitch to put a pair of runners on.
Olivia Lee also jumped on the first pitch she saw sending it back up the middle to bring home Garcia for the tie while Perales moved to third on the throw home.
Shelby Keltner stepped to the plate and placed a perfect squeeze bunt down the third base line to bring home Perales for the 3-2 lead heading to the fifth.
Simon Fraser was able to put two runners into scoring position in the top of the fifth on a single and an error. Davyduke then doubled to center field to bring home both runners for the 4-3 lead.
Taylor Rodriguez entered the circle in relief and quickly retired the next two batters as she caught the last batter looking to end the threat.
The Red Leafs also made a pitching change in the bottom of the frame but Dominican quickly figured her out as Guerrero and
Melissa Garcia singled to put a pair of runners on. Simon Fraser tried to get the lead runner on the next at bat but a muffed catch at third loaded the bases with no outs. Rue and
Alicia Garcia each drew walks to bring in a pair of runs and retake the 5-4 lead.
Rodriguez retired the side in the sixth and Guerrero walked to lead off the bottom of the next frame.
Melissa Garcia singled through the left side to keep the momentum going on offense and Guerrero made a heads up play on the base pats to get to third with Garcia advancing to second on the throw. Saucedo took her turn laying down a suicide squeeze this time up the first-base line to bring home Guerrero before Rue singled up the middle to bring home one more insurance run.
Rodriguez once again worked quickly to ensure the victory with three outs while the one walk in the top of the seventh proving to be the only runner she allowed on the base paths all day. The teams attempted to make a quick turnaround to complete the doubleheader but were rained out in the bottom of the second inning.
Dominican will return to action Saturday as it hosts Concordia University Irvine in its conference opener beginning at noon at Penguin Field.
