ROHNERT PARK, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball wrapped up the PacWest/CCAA Challenge Saturday night with a match-up against the Gators of San Francisco State. This was only the second game of the season, but this game had a March feeling to it with the Gators squeaking out a 78 to 75 victory in overtime.
Newcomer
Jorge Ochoa led the offensive charge for the Penguins as he totaled 21 points on an efficient 7 for 15 from the field. Fellow newcomer
Jordan Archie was second on the team in scoring ending the night with 13 points while draining three from long range. Archie, the CSUMB transfer was familiar with the Gators having faced them multiple times throughout his career gave them fits all night.
In the first half the Penguins were trying to find their rhythm against a stingy Gators defense. Dominican was doing a good job of getting to the basket they just couldn't finish early on as SFSU held them to 37% from the field in the first half.
Jaayden Bush was an energizer bunny for the Pengs all night as he dished out a team high seven assists to go along with nine points. Bush, who sat out all last season with an injury, sure is happy to be back on the floor balling with his teammates.
The Gators would hold a five-point lead going into the half, but the Penguins came out a different refocused group. Dominican was held to only one three-pointer in the first half, that changed in the second. Ochoa and Archie led the long-range attack in the second half as Dominican drained seven threes. Senior
Nathan Ilunga gave the Gators fits in the paint ending the night with a double-double grabbing 14 boards and 11 points.
Dominican flipped the switch on offense shooting 58% from the field in the second half which led to them having a nine-point lead with 5 minutes left. The Gators didn't go away quietly as they countered with a run of their own to get back in the game, and eventually took the lead with 15 seconds left.
Another newcomer
Darius Best saved his best for last as he took a pass from Bush and swerved through the lane for the game-tying lay-up with three seconds left on the clock. Best, the Cabrillo College transfer, finished the night with 11 points and four rebounds. The Gators would go on to out-last Dominican in overtime as they held the Pengs to zero field goals.
Dominican will host CSU East Bay in their home opener Nov. 17
