LANGLEY, B.C.- Dominican women's basketball matched up against host Simon Fraser Saturday night in day two of the Canadian Tip-Off Classic. Newcomer
Abby Cooper dropped a game high 29 points for the Pengs while going 7 for 8 from the charity stripe. Simon Fraser would have a big second half going on to win this one 77 to 67.
Cooper, the CSU East Bay grad transfer, was looking to score early and often against the Red Leafs. She got the Penguins on the board early in the first quarter when she drove the ball hard to the basket forcing a foul. Dominican looked to work down low quite a bit as they finished with 32 points in the paint. Senior
Alaiyah San Juan had a couple big buckets in the first half which included a long range three and a nice driving lay-up in the second quarter. San Juan and sophomore
Adia Walker were second on the team in scoring with 10 points each.
The second quarter was the best quarter for Dominican as they scored 25 points to Simon Fraser's 14. Turnovers led to offense for the Penguins as they their defense clamped up in the second quarter. Dominican's defense was able to force 24 turnovers from the Red Leafs offense on the night and a bunch came in the second quarter. Cooper put an exclamation mark to the end of the quarter showing her versality by draining back-to-back three-pointers. The Penguins would head into halftime leading by eight.
Simon Fraser came out for the second half a new group as they would outscore the Penguins 47 to 29. The big difference was points off turnovers. When Dominican lost the ball, the Red Leafs capitalized finishing with 32 points from turnovers. Dominican fought until the final whistle with
Taylor Linzie coming on strong in the second half. Linzie, another grad transfer from CSU East Bay finished with nine points on an efficient 4 for 6 from the field.
