SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- Dominican men's basketball played host to Pacific Union College in a non-conference match-up Tuesday night. The Pengs, coming off a dominant showing in a Sunday night victory against CSU East Bay, looked to stay hot against the Pioneers.
Pacific Union College didn't need anytime settling in as they hit back-to-back three's their first two series on offense.
Jaayden Bush collected the first points for the Penguins as he slashed his way to the bucket for a smooth lay-up. Bush was a menace in the paint early as he scored six quick points all coming in the form of a lay-up.
Every time the Penguins would score it seemed like the Pioneers had an answer. D'Montay Warner hit three from long range to keep the Pioneers up early. Dominican's answer to all the threes the Pioneers were shooting was to dominate down low, and they did just that. Newcomer
Jorge Ochoa got his night started at the charity stripe as he forced the defense to foul him on a strong drive to the basket. The Los Angeles native then scored on the ensuing possession showing his mid-range abilities hitting nothing but net.
Once Dominican started closing out at the three-point line, the Pioneers had trouble finding their rhythm on offense. Junior
Thomas Oosterbroek was one person who had no trouble finding rhythm as he had a big first half for the Pengs. The Portland transfer went for 15 points on an efficient 5 for 7 from the field while going perfect from long-range hitting three. He would finish with a game-high 24 points.
Oosterbroek and Ochoa dominated much of the first half, but they also got the help from their second unit. Guards
DM Sanders and
Darius Best logged solid minutes for Dominican with Best collecting five points and Sanders provided the fans with a highlight play. Sanders, the San Diego native, showed his nifty dribbling moves as he put his defender on skates and finished it with a knock-down three-pointer. The Penguins would take a comfortable 56-37 lead into halftime.
Coming out for the second half, Dominican didn't let the Pioneers get hot from long range like they did in the first. Instead it was the opposite, the Pengs hit a couple a couple of three-pointers to start the half thanks to
Nathan Ilunga and Oosterbroek. Throughout the rest of the game Dominican made it hard on their opponent to score which led to a big lead.
Sargent Jeffery dominated down low as he was too much to handle for the Pioneers. Jeffery displayed numerous post moves and even provided a break-away slam to push the Pengs lead to 25. He would finish the game second on the team in scoring posting 14 points and nine rebounds. Dominican would cruise to a 102-68 victory.
The Penguins are back in action this Friday Nov. 22
nd as they travel to Chico State at 6 p.m.
