Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Penguin find their direction against Sharks

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – In 15 minutes of the second half Dominican men's soccer went from sure defeat to pure elation in a 3-2 victory over Hawai'i Pacific University on Thursday evening at Waipi'o Peninsula Stadium.

After managing a single shot in the first half, the Penguins (4-4-1, 1-2-0 PacWest) had six shots with four on frame with three into the back netting in the second half. The lone miss came off the foot of Patrick Zamora Salazar who was instrumental in two of the three second half goals with his saved shot ending in an assist as it deflected right to the foot of a teammate.

HPU pounced quickly as Kelly Takara took a ball into the middle of the box drawing three defenders and then slipping a pass behind to Jonathan Sorto for the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. The Sharks then added to the lead in the 20th minute as a shot went off the post then Alejandro Reyes made a brilliant save on a rebound opportunity by Dylan Barreria but the ball fell to the foot of Cade Anderson who put it in the upper netting for the 2-0 lead.

Dominican was unable to mount much of a counter as they were held without a shot for the remainder of the half. The Penguins persisted and a good run down the sideline by Zamora Salazar opened up some space as several passes got them deeper in scoring position until Chris Mendez-Lemus popped a ball high in the air in front of the net and Armando Jimenez bicycle kicked it into the goal to cut the lead in half in the 61st minute.

Five minutes later it was Lex Bernier running down the right side who put a high looping shot towards the back post that went over the keepers hands and into the back netting for the tie. Zamora Salazar was at it again in the 76th minute as he raced down the field and got a shot off near post that was just deflected by the keeper but right to the foot of Diego Grande who put it away for the 3-2 lead.

Dominican now looks forward to a final showdown on the islands as it travels to face the University of Hawai'i at Hilo on Sunday at UHH Soccer Field with kickoff set for 3 p.m. HST.
