SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer rode its explosive offense to a 4-0 victory Thursday afternoon over Academy of Art at Kennelly Field.
The Penguins (6-5-1, 3-3-0 PacWest) dominated time of possession and amassed 13 shots with eight on frame while limiting the Urban Knights (1-7-2, 0-4-1 PacWest) offensive opportunities until the final 15 minutes of the game.
Anthony Stainer scored his first goal of the season for Dominican while
Chris Mendez-Lemus scored his third and
Thomas Van Schoor recorded the first brace of his career.
Alejandro Reyes made three amazing saves down the stretch in the second half to record his fifth shutout of the season.
The Penguins wasted no time making a dangerous run in the first minute as Stainer went down the left side before sending a cross back to the middle looking for
Diego Grande. An ART U defender was able to get a toe on the ball slightly redirecting the trajectory as the momentum of the pass took it into the back netting for the 1-0 Dominican lead.
Dominican continued to look dangerous in the attacking third as some heavy pressure in the 18th minute allowed Stainer another look at an empty net but this time the defender was able to clear the ball. The ball remained inside the box bouncing around feet and it looked like Grande had scored but the flag came up. Three minutes later, Mendez-Lemus looked to get behind the back line of the Urban Knights beating the keeper 1-on-1, but once again the flag came up for the offside.
The Penguins exploded in the second half beginning in the 52nd minute as Stainer quickly played a ball down the right side to Nick Van der Waar van Gulik who immediately crossed the ball across the goal where Mendez-Lemus awaited for the right-footed shot into the middle of the goal for the 2-0 lead. The Penguins brought in some fresh legs at the top of their formation a few minutes later and it paid off as Stainer tallied his second assist of the day with a perfect cross to Van Schoor who tapped the ball into the back of the net from just in front of the goal line for the 3-0 lead in the 61st minute.
Three minutes later,
Norman Tellez played a perfect through ball to Van Schoor who held a defender on his hip and sent a left-footed shot inside the left post for the 4-0 lead. The Urban Knights best chance at a score came in the 76th minute as Joey Glaab got off a strong right-footed shot from inside the box forcing Reyes to make a diving save to his right. The rebound landed right at the foot of Guilherme Gomes and he tried to send the ball inside the near post but Reyes recovered in time to make a second diving save to punch the ball wide of his net.
Dominican will hit the road to take on the newest PacWest member in the Bay Area on Saturday as it faces Menlo at Wunderlich Field in Atherton, California. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. PDT.
