San Rafael, Calif. — Dominican men's basketball hosted a non-conference match against UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon. The Penguins coming off a close 65-60 loss to Hawaii Pacific this past Thursday got back in the win column against the Banana Slugs. Dominican dominated from first tip winning 71 to 59.
This win put a cap on Dominican's four-game losing streak and builds momentum as they travel to Hawaii next week for a three-game road trip. The Penguins came in hot from the start of the game continuing scoring until the final minute.
PJ Volz led both teams in points with 16 and collected four steals.
Marcus McCutchen came in right behind him with 12 points and six rebounds.
Dale Currie who came alive in the second half, ended the game with 12 points as well. The first half began with a Dominican tip-off win. UC Santa Cruz came back to score the first point of the game, but a layup from
Nathan Ilunga gave the Penguins the lead and never looked back.
The Penguins continued to stack points from then on. Currie dropped a three midway through the first half to top off the team's longest 9-point run and set the score 16-5. The Banana
Slugs tried to get themselves back in the game by closing the lead to three at 18-15, but the Penguins were not having it. They doubled back to close the half 33-24.
Dominican was able to maintain this initial lead for the remainder of the second half. One of the main contributors to the offensive production of the second half was Currie, who knocked down nine points in under five minutes. Junior
Brendon Johnson and Volz also had notable threes in crucial moments late in the second half. The Penguins stretched the lead to 15 points which resulted in them cruising to victory.
