Penguins rush past Jacks for big win

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer rode a first half explosion to a 3-1 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday at Kennelly Field.

Lex Bernier led the way as he collected his second goal of the year and his first assist of the season. The Penguins (1-1-0) more than doubled the Lumberjacks (1-1-0) in shots 15-8 while the only shot Humboldt could put on frame was a penalty kick due to some stingy defending by the Dominican back line.

The Penguins wasted no time as Lex Bernier flew down the left flank cut into the box then squeezed a shot past the keeper from a tight angle to take the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Five minutes later Bernier again made a run down the left side and sent a cross into the center of the box finding the head of Chris Mendez-Lemus as he nodded the ball towards the far post for the 2-0 lead.

Bernier and Diego Grande kept the pressure from the sides up as they continued to test the Jacks' Adrian Gallardo in goal. DImani Mathlin continued his far throws into the box from the attacking third and in the 28th minute a Cal Poly Humboldt defender attempted to head a ball wide of the far post but it snuck inside the woodwork for an own goal and giving Dominican the 3-0 lead at the half.

A foul in the box three minutes into the second half put the Jacks at the penalty spot and Cole Falco converted to narrow the gap to two, but Dominican never allowed another shot on frame despite high pressure to take home the victory.

The Penguins will return to action Thursday as they hit the road to take on Academy of Art in a non-conference meeting between the conference rivals at 1 p.m. PDT at Paul Goode Field.
