Melendez lifts Penguins with late goal

SAN FRANCISCO – Dominican women's soccer dominated possession but it took 89 minutes to finally find a goal in a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Academy of Art at Paul Goode Field.

The Penguins (3-4-0) finished with 22 shots and 15 on goal while holding the Urban Knights (1-5) to five shots with one on goal on the afternoon but it only took one to break the tie. Alejandra Melendez led the team with six shots and four on frame with the last of her day becoming the second of her season.

After repeated opportunities failed to find the back of the net due largely to the presence of Nicole Peoples in net who made 14 saves for ART U who left the game in the 88th minute due to injury. Dominican continued to press forward and earned a corner in the 89th minute with Melendez sending the ball in from the right side on a low line drive that went over the keeper and curved towards the net. An Urban Knight defender attempted to stop it from crossing the line but it was too late as the ball deflected off her shin and into the back netting for the goal.

Melendez had one of the best opportunities of the first half as she received a ball at the top right of the box in the 22nd minute, weaved through three defenders and tried to go high over Peoples, but the keeper pushed the ball straight up and caught it to keep her net clean. Three minutes later Marissa Ray looked to have opened the scoring with a goal but as the team celebrated a late foul call came in from the center to negate the goal. Tanya Bills also had a good chance at a goal in the 42nd minute as she was able to loose a shot from the top of the box towards the near post but Peoples made the right read and secured the save.

Danielle Gonzalez had the first attempt for the Penguins in the second half as she won a battle with a defender for the ball in the box took one touch and put a shot towards the back post but People made a diving save to steer the ball wide in the 53rd minute. Bills poked a ball ahead to Miranda Gregory in the 65th minute and she had another strong shot towards the upper-left 90 of the goal but once again People parried the ball aside with one hand to preserve the tie.

Dominican will return to its home pitch Monday as it opens conference play against Hawaii Pacific at 3 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field.
