SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 Wednesday afternoon to Sonoma State at Kennelly Field.
The game was largely played in the midfield throughout the evening with each team finishing with seven shots.
Miranda Gregory and
Audrey Nakashima each tallied a shot on goal for the Penguins (1-4-0) while Annette Sotelo tallied her fourth goal of the season for the Seawolves (2-1-1).
SSU got the early lead as an errant clearance landed at the feet of Sotelo who pushed the ball forward then chipped the bouncing ball just inside the near post for the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. The Penguins loosed a pair of shots within the next eight minutes and the rest of the half was dominated by the midfields as the ball rarely made it to the attacking third of either side of the field.
Sotelo looked to add to the lead in the 61st minute with a shot from 10-yards above the box that curved towards the left post but
Rylee Buesing made a diving save to keep it out of her net.
Bella Bueno crossed a ball in from the right side to Gregory in the box in the 74th minute and Gregory tried to guide it inside the near post but missed her target by inches as Dominican continued to seek the equalizer.
Abigail Estes played a long ball over the top of the defense in the 81st minute to Gregory who beat her defender and quickly put a shot on frame but Claudia Janese was able to get her fingertips on it and push it inches outside the left post to preserve the Seawolf lead.
Dominican will travel south to face Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at noon PDT at the CSUMB Soccer Complex.
