Dominican falls to Montana State, Billings, while adding victory over Chaminade on final day in Turlock

San Rafael, CALIF. -- Dominican University of California (15-16, 10-5) dropped a game one decision to the University of Montana, Billings (13-19, 5-7) before adding a win against PacWest foe Chaminade University (19-19, 11-12) in a makeup game after a rainout caused cancelation earlier this week.

Game one vs. Montana State, Billings

Freshman Marina Medina continued her impressive streak to her inaugural collegiate campaign with a pair of RBIs off a third inning double up the middle. The Penguins tallied seven total hits in the first game of the day with senior pitcher Shelby Keltner leading the way in that department with a pair of knocks in her three at-bats. Freshmen Taylor Roriguez and Jayla Cadena each threw three innings in the matchup with Cadena allowing no runs and just one hit in her three Innings of work.

Dominican looked to make it's mark in the opening inning of the game as a shaky start by the Yellowjackets led to the Penguins enjoying runners on all three bases with only one out, but a pair of strikeouts would end the threat. The Penguins turned a double play to end the first inning minutes later as neither team was able to put runs on the board over the course of the first and second innings. Freshman Kate Tobola led off by finding first base for already the second time in the game in the bottom of the third with a single through the left side before sophomore Melissa Garcia advanced her to third with a single to right before stealing second base to put two runners in scoring position. Medina wasted no time in bringing them both home, notching a single up the middle that cleared the bases and gave Dominican a 2-0 lead.

The lead was immediately squandered as a slew of runs gave Montana State a 4-2 lead after a fielding error that would have ended the inning ended up leading to three more runs before the Yellowjackets were retired. Despite having plenty of game to mount a comeback, the 4-2 score would hold to the end to give Montana State the early-day victory.

Game two vs. Chaminade University

Keltner gave Dominican another immaculate start as she allowed just seven hits in the complete game victory with only one unearned run being added by Chaminade. Seniors Kamaleinani Kaleikini and Lauren Lapinid each tallied a pair of hits while Lapinid also earned both of Dominican's RBIs in the victory, going 2-for-3 from the plate.

An all-so-rare inside-the-park homerun was the reason for Chaminade's only run on the afternoon after a throwing error on a triple advanced batter all the way home in the first inning. The Silversword lead was short-lived as Lapinid's first RBI came as a single through the left side in the bottom of the second inning, scoring freshman Annabelle Burke and tying the game at one apiece. These runs would be all that was added in the scorers column until the bottom of the sixth inning when Burke led off with a double to left field. Back-to-back singled by Kaleikini and Lapinid brought Burke across home plate before senior Faith Erb walked to load the bases in the next at-bat. The walk proved costly as a fielding error led to each runner advancing a base to bring Kaleikini home, good enough for Dominican's third run of the game. The trio of runs were all Dominican needed to get past Chaminade as the final score read 3-1 in favor of the Penguins.

Dominican now looks to enjoy 12 days off after playing 17 games in 10 days as Azusa Pacific comes next on April 14.
